The story
About this festival.
Grand River Valley Ice Wine Festival is a month-long self-guided wine trail event held annually throughout March in the Geneva and Madison, Ohio area — now in its 19th edition, it spans 7 participating wineries across the Grand River Valley wine region, with tastings priced at $7 per person per stop, running noon to 5 p.m. daily. The festival is organized by the Wine Growers of the Grand River Valley, a collective whose member producers farm over 400 acres of vineyards in this cool-climate northeastern Ohio region.
The trail format is self-directed: visitors receive area maps at any participating winery and move between all 7 locations in any order they choose. Each stop includes a sample of the venue's featured ice wine paired with a house-prepared appetizer. The 7 participants are Debonné Vineyards, Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Grand River Cellars Winery & Restaurant, Laurello Vineyards, South River Vineyards, Cask 307 Winery, and Red Eagle Distillery. Vidal Blanc is the dominant variety across the trail, with vintages ranging from 2017 through 2021. Cask 307 pours a 2021 Rosé of Vidal Blanc Ice Wine; South River Vineyards features a 2017 Concord Ice Wine and a Blush Ice Wine blending Chambourcin and Vidal Blanc; Grand River Cellars adds a Maple Ice Wine alongside its 2019 Vidal Blanc. On festival Saturdays, hours extend to 11 a.m., and individual venues layer in programming such as live music, ice carving, tractor-pulled hayrides, specialty cocktail classes, and artisan vendor markets. Several wineries also coordinate a Friday evening Ice Wine Progressive Dinner series throughout March, which requires advance reservations directly through each winery's booking page.
Because each stop is paid independently at $7 on arrival — no single ticket covers the full trail — visitors control their total spend based on how many locations they visit. Laurello Vineyards is closed Mondays and Tuesdays; Cask 307 is closed Wednesdays. Confirming individual winery hours before planning a multi-stop day is advisable. Saturday visits (11 a.m.–5 p.m.) offer the longest window. South River Vineyards and Red Eagle Distillery both offer self-guided vineyard hikes on their grounds, with South River's property spanning 80 acres — no reservations required for either.
The Grand River Valley is a recognized cool-climate wine region in northeastern Ohio where cold winters create the conditions necessary for ice wine production. Ice wine is made from grapes that freeze naturally on the vine, concentrating sugars and producing intensely sweet, low-volume wines. Vidal Blanc is particularly well-suited to this process in Ohio, and the Grand River Valley Ice Wine Festival has built its 19-year run around demonstrating what the region's climate makes possible across 7 distinct producers.
