How to read the wine calendar

Most sites that promise "wine events near you" list everything with a corkscrew in the flyer: brewery anniversaries, cocktail classes, paint-and-sip nights, food festivals with a wine tent in the corner. Pour Trail does the opposite. Every row on this page is a wine occasion first, and each one is sorted into one of two shapes so you know what you are buying before you click. A festival means several wineries or producers pouring for a ticketed public crowd — 20 to 100 of them at a grand tasting, a dozen along a downtown wine walk, the whole appellation on a harvest weekend. An event means one winery, tasting room or wine bar hosting something on its own calendar: a release party, a pairing dinner, Friday music on the crush pad, a barrel tasting, a class.

The split matters for planning. Festivals are the trips: they sell out, they cost $30 to $100 before the VIP tier, and they are worth a hotel night. Events are the weeknights and Sunday afternoons: often free with a tasting, rarely more than $60 unless dinner is served, and usually within an hour of home if you live anywhere near a wine trail. Timing follows the vine. Winery events run all year but peak from June through October, when tasting rooms move outside and harvest gives every producer a reason to throw a party. Festivals cluster in two windows — April through June for wine walks and food-and-wine weekends, September through November for harvest — with a third season in Florida, Texas and Arizona between November and March. Prices on both sides of the calendar hold steady across the country; what changes is what the ticket includes, which is why each listing states the tiers, the inclusions and the date we last verified them.

What you will not find here: beer festivals, whiskey and spirits festivals, food-only events and dinners at a single restaurant. When a real wine festival also pours beer or spirits, we say so in the description rather than hide it. If a listing slips through that does not belong, the contact page reaches a person, and organizers can submit an event we have missed. The calendar and map show the same data by date and by place.

Pour Trail sorts them into two kinds: festivals, where several wineries pour for a ticketed crowd, and events, which are the smaller things wineries and wine bars run themselves — release parties, pairing dinners, live music in the vineyard, harvest days, classes. Right now the calendar holds 145 upcoming festivals and 1,937 upcoming events across 50 states. Beer festivals, spirits festivals and food-only events are not listed.

What is the difference between a wine festival and a wine event on Pour Trail?
Scale and who is pouring. A festival has multiple wineries or producers pouring for a ticketed public audience, usually 20 to 100 of them, for $30 to $100 general admission. An event is one winery, tasting room or wine bar hosting something on its own calendar — free or $10 to $60, a few dozen to a few hundred people. Both are wine-only. We keep them on separate pages so a search for a festival is not buried under a hundred Friday-night music nights.
How much do wine events cost?
Tasting-room events are the cheap end of the calendar: many are free with a tasting purchase, live music and release parties run $10 to $30, and seated pairing dinners $60 to $150. Festivals run $30 to $100 for general admission with VIP tiers from $100 to $250. Where an organizer publishes prices, every listing shows the tiers we verified and the date we checked them.
When is wine event season?
Festivals cluster in April through June and September through November, with a winter season in Florida, Texas and Arizona. Winery and tasting-room events run year-round, with the densest calendars in summer, when vineyards host concerts and sunset tastings weekly, and at harvest. January and February are the quietest weeks everywhere except the indoor expos in big cities.

California's total reflects the sheer number of tasting rooms; the Finger Lakes, Virginia, Michigan and Texas Hill Country follow because their wine trails coordinate events across many small wineries. Does Pour Trail list beer or spirits events?
No. Pour Trail is wine only. Festivals that pour beer or spirits alongside a real wine program are listed and described honestly as mixed; beer-led, whiskey-led and food-only events are removed when we find them. If a listing on this page turns out not to involve wine, tell us through the contact page and we will pull it.
